NWCAVE Update: The Berg Family
We want to share the latest on Tom, Marlene, Erik, and little Tommy
Marlene has been down with a bad cold and even lost her voice for a while, but she’s on the mend and speaking again.
Tom was finally able to have his catheter removed and cleaned after being delayed during the eviction crisis. This is something he must have done every three weeks, and we’re grateful it’s now been taken care of.
Thanks On-Point Disposal crew, along with a generous donor family from Washougal, the Bergs now have a larger, fresh, clean storage unit—covered through November.
Motel rent is covered until October 1st, thanks to so many of you who have donated. This ensures the family remains safe for now.
Through #GiveMore24, our goal was $5,000. With your incredible support, we’ve already raised $11,187 (before fees by Mightycause) for The Berg Family campaign —more than double the goal! The campaign runs until 11:59 PM on September 25th, so there’s still time to help.
The family now has a contact at the VA and will be meeting with them this week to explore next steps.
The Bergs are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support. Because of you, they are safe today, and together we continue to take things one day at a time. ❤️
COMMUNITY ALERT: The Berg Family Needs Our Support
NWCAVE was recently made aware of the heartbreaking eviction of the Berg family — an 82-year-old disabled Vet, his 83-year-old wife, their adult son, and 9-year-old- grandson — who were forced out of their Clark County home of 15 years. The Bergs fell on hard times earlier this year. Mr. Berg is bedridden with multiple disabilities, and his wife — his primary caregiver — relies on their son, who recently had to quit his job to care for both parents. Despite going through the full legal process, receiving a short extension from the court, and knowing the deadline to leave was approaching, this family still faced a devastating outcome.
When eviction day came, everything the Bergs owned was thrown out of the home — some items even tossed from a second-story window, shattering belongings that held 15 years of memories. After giving so much of their own money over the years for repairs, appliances, and upkeep of this rental home, this was how they were treated in their final days there.
Last night, Mr. and Mrs. Berg stayed in a motel. Their son and grandson slept at a rest stop in their truck. NWCAVE has provided shelter for the next week for the family in addition connecting them all to resources for shelter, legal support, and care for Mr. Berg’s health needs.
Evictions happen, but this level of inhumanity should never happen to anyone — let alone a family who called this house home for over a decade.
We’ll continue sharing updates as we learn more. In the meantime, please share this post to raise awareness and help connect the Berg family with any additional community resources that may be available.
Funds on this fundraiser campaign, will be provided to the family. So, let's all #GiveMore24 in the month of September!
